Rail passengers across the UK are bracing for significant travel disruption this festive season. Britain’s busiest train station, Liverpool Street, is set for an eight-day closure beginning on Christmas Eve as part of a shutdown expected to last until January 2, 2026.
The annual engineering works, strategically scheduled during the quieter commuter period, will once again cause widespread delays and diversions. Last year, Liverpool Street Station also closed for eight days over the festive season. Network Rail has now confirmed an identical closure this year, halting several major routes, including the Weaver Line, Stansted Express, and Greater Anglia and c2c services.

How London’s Liverpool Street Station shutdown will affect travellers
Train services that will be affected:
- Greater Anglia, including Stansted Express, will operate Great Eastern and West Anglia mainline services from Stratford during the closure.
- c2c services will instead run from London Fenchurch Street via West Ham.
- Weaver Line trains will depart from London Fields, serving Chingford, Enfield Town, and Cheshunt.
Work will also continue on the roof renewal programme above the public concourse and Platforms 1 to 10, where panels are being replaced to let in more natural light, enhance drainage, and reinforce the roof against increasingly frequent and severe storms. The station concourse will remain closed throughout the project, with train services scheduled to resume on January 2, 2026.
