It’s the summertime, and that means it’s travel season. And if you’re looking for something new this year, how about one of these most underrated travel destinations in the United States?
Here’s the top five from a list that was recently released by U.S. News & World Report:
5. Block Island, Rhode Island
Boasting 17 miles of beaches, this island sits about 9 miles south of Rhode Island’s coast, and about 14 miles east of the tip of New York’s Long Island. Along with outdoor activities, you can visit two historic lighthouses on the island, as well as the aquarium at the Block Island Maritime Institute.
4. Chattanooga, Tennessee
The “Scenic City” sits in southeast Tennessee along the Tennessee River between Atlanta and Nashville. Things to do include visiting the zoo, aquarium and the Walnut Street Bridge, which is one of the world’s longest pedestrian bridges. Also plan to visit nearby Lookout Mountain, where you have a view of seven nearby states from the top.
3. Door County, Wisconsin
Nicknamed “Cape Cod of the Midwest,” the easternmost county in Wisconsin is home to six state parks and is a great travel destination during all four seasons. In the winter, experience frozen lakes, cross-country skiing and snowshoe hikes. During the warmer months, fishing, leaf peeping and enjoying the lakes are popular amongst vacationers.
2. Sawtooth National Recreation Area, Idaho
More than 700 acres in central Idaho, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area is home to hundreds of lakes created by alpine glaciers. If you enjoy hiking, try one of the 700-plus miles of trails with beautiful views of mountains and lakes. Or you can take a kayak or canoe down one of the many rivers in the area.

The largest of Georgia’s Golden Isles, St. Simons Island is known for its warm climate, beautiful beaches, and historical sites. The island also boasts a variety of restaurants and shops, plus miles of trails for biking and hiking.
